His father, Euphemianus, was a senator, known for his compassion and generosity toward the poor. Every day, he provided three tables in his home for orphans, widows, strangers, and those in need.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHis wife was named Aglais, and for many years she was childless. In response to her fervent prayers for a child, God heard her supplication and blessed the couple with a son.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAs the child grew, he received an excellent education and became exceedingly wise and instructed in the things of God. When he reached the proper age, his parents arranged his marriage to a young woman of royal and noble lineage. On the night of their wedding, however, Saint Alexios took his gold ring and belt, returned them to his bride, and left the bridal chamber.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTaking some money from his wealth, he departed by ship, renouncing the vanity of earthly glory. He arrived first in Laodicea of Syria and from there traveled to Edessa in Mesopotamia.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere, Saint Alexios distributed his money among the poor and even gave away his fine clothing. Dressing himself in worn and patched garments, he took his place among the poor in the narthex of the church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHe chose a life of extreme asceticism, fasting throughout the week and receiving the Holy and Immaculate Mysteries every Sunday. Only then would he eat a little bread and drink some water.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHis Parents Search for Him\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMeanwhile, his parents searched everywhere for their beloved son and sent their servants to find him. In their search, the servants even reached the church in Edessa where Alexios was living, but they did not recognize him.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThey eventually returned to Rome without finding him. His mother, overwhelmed with grief, dressed in poor garments and remained near the doorway of her home, mourning day and night. His bride likewise put on sackcloth and remained near her mother-in-law, faithfully awaiting his return.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSaint Alexios remained for seventeen years in the narthex of the church of the Theotokos, living a life pleasing to God.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOne night, the Most Holy Theotokos appeared in a dream to the sacristan of the church and instructed him to bring “the Man of God” inside the church.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe sacristan went outside but found no one except Alexios. He prayed to the Theotokos to reveal to him who the Man of God was, and she indicated Alexios. The saint was then brought into the church with great honor and reverence.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHis Return to Rome\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen Saint Alexios realized that his holiness had become known, he secretly departed. He intended to travel to Tarsus and live near the church of the Holy Apostle Paul, where no one would know him.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDivine Providence, however, had another plan.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA violent wind drove the ship off course and brought it instead to Rome. When Alexios disembarked, he understood that the Lord desired him to return to his own home.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHe encountered his father, who did not recognize him. Alexios begged him for mercy and asked only to be permitted to live on the leftovers from his table.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHis father, being compassionate, gladly agreed and even assigned a servant to care for him.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSome of the household servants mocked and mistreated Alexios, yet he endured everything patiently. He often gave his food to others and continued his strict fasting, taking only a little bread and water after receiving the Holy and Immaculate Mysteries.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThus, for another seventeen years, Saint Alexios lived in his own father’s house without anyone recognizing him.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Repose of Saint Alexios\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhen the time of his departure from this earthly life drew near, Alexios wrote the story of his life on a piece of paper. He described the places he had visited and included certain private details known only to his parents, so that his true identity could be established.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOne Sunday, while Archbishop Innocent was celebrating the Divine Liturgy, a voice was heard from the Holy Altar calling upon those present to seek out the Man of God.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOn Friday, Saint Alexios surrendered his soul into the hands of God.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThat same afternoon, the faithful emperors and the Archbishop gathered in church and prayed that God would reveal the identity and location of His holy servant. A heavenly voice directed them to the house of Euphemianus.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe emperors and the Archbishop went to his home and asked Euphemianus about the Man of God. At first, he knew nothing. But the servant who had cared for the poor stranger, moved by divine inspiration, described the remarkable ascetic life that Alexios had led.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEuphemianus then went to him, not yet realizing that the holy man had already reposed. He uncovered his face and saw that it shone like the face of an angel.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn the saint’s hand was a written document that no one was able to remove.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe emperors and the Archbishop prayed to Saint Alexios, asking him to allow them to take the paper from his hand. The document was then received and read.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOnly then did Euphemianus realize that the poor and unknown ascetic who had lived for seventeen years in his house was his own son—the son for whom he had searched and mourned for so many years.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGreat sorrow filled the household. His mother and his faithful bride also wept bitterly when they learned the truth.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe Holy Relics and Miracles\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEmperor Honorius and the Archbishop carried the precious relics of Saint Alexios into the center of Rome and invited all the people to come, venerate them, and receive a blessing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMiracles immediately began to occur.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThose who approached and venerated his holy relics received healing: the mute spoke, the deaf heard, the blind received their sight, lepers were cleansed, and those afflicted by evil spirits were delivered.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSeeing these miracles, the faithful glorified God.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo many people gathered to venerate the saint that it became difficult to carry his relics to the Church of Saint Boniface for burial.
